Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation

Showing God's Love with Mercy: Meditation from John 8:3-11

What if the stones we carry—our quick judgments, sharp words, and silent resentments—could be set down for good? We journey through Psalm 51 and John 8 to explore how confession opens the door to mercy, and how Jesus transforms a moment of public shame into a path of restoration. With simple breathwork and gentle muscle relaxation, we make space for God’s presence, quiet the noise of the day, and prepare our hearts to hear a better word than condemnation.

We read the story of the woman caught in adultery with fresh eyes, tracing the tension between the law’s demand and Jesus’ response. Rather than dismissing sin, he exposes hidden hypocrisy, protects dignity, and offers both pardon and direction: neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more. That pivot becomes our pattern. We talk through what mercy looks like when you’ve been wronged, how to move beyond performative niceness into genuine forgiveness, and why embodying grace does not mean ignoring harm. Expect practical steps: a breathing rhythm to calm reactivity, a body scan to release defensiveness, and two piercing reflection questions that bring mercy into your hardest relationships.

You’ll leave with a simple weekly affirmation—As God has shown me mercy, I will show it to others—and a framework for turning received grace into daily practice. Whether you’re new to guided Christian meditation or deepening your spiritual rhythm, this time helps you trade accusation for compassion, fear for courage, and shame for a restored future. If this reflection helps you draw near to God and love people more freely, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help others find the show.

Pastor Robert Young:

Welcome to this week's Guided Christian Meditation. Here we put aside all distractions to enter into God's presence and hear from God better and to allow the Holy Spirit to make us more like Christ. I am your host, Pastor Robert Young, and thank you for allowing me to be your guide on this journey. If you're new to Guided Christian Meditation, check out Episode 164, Getting Started in Guided Christian Meditation. Episode 164 explains the why and even the science of all of the stages of meditation that we practice. This week's subject is about showing God's love through mercy. Our scripture is from John chapter 8, verse 3 through 11.

Pastor Robert Young:

But first, according to Scriptures, God requires us to be completely involved and free from wrongful acts in mind, body, and spirit. Confession prepares the heart for being in the presence of Almighty God. Let's repeat the prayer that King David prayed in Psalms chapter 51, verses 1 through 4, where it says, Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Pastor Robert Young:

Before we start to reflect on John chapter 8, verses 3 through eleven, let's prepare our mind by closing our eyes and taking a deep breath as we invite the presence of God to fill us. Now, take a deep breath in for account of seven, hold the breath for a count of five, and slowly exhale for a count of seven. Let's repeat. Take a deep breath in for a count of seven, hold the breath for account of five, and then slowly exhale for a count of seven.

Pastor Robert Young:

Now let's prepare our body with muscle relaxation exercises. We will simply tense each muscle group for three seconds and then release the muscle. As always, don't hold your breath for this portion of the meditation. Let's begin with the calf muscles. Lightly tense the calf muscles for a count of three. Now release. Moving upward to the hamstrings, quads, and glutes. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Moving to the abdominals, chest, and back area. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Now moving to the arms and the shoulders. Lightly tense these muscle groups for three seconds. Now release.

Pastor Robert Young:

Now we can enter into worship of our Heavenly Father by focusing on Psalms chapter 100, verses 1 through 3, where it tells us to shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness, come before Him with joyful songs. Let's take a moment to lift up our voice in praise and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father, who is worthy of all honor and glory, by repeating Psalms chapter 8, verse 9, which says, Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

Pastor Robert Young:

Now that we have prepared our mind, body and spirit, let's begin to focus on John chapter 8, verse 3 through 11 "And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery, and when they had set her in the midst, they said unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned, but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground, and they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more. Imagine this woman was guilty, and according to the law, the penalty for her sin was death. Imagine the public humiliation and shame she must have felt at this moment. Imagine her rethinking all of her life's decision. Feel the regret that she must have felt at that exact time.

Pastor Robert Young:

The scripture doesn't say that she tried to pass blame on anyone or anything. She simply accepted her fate as she waited for the sentence to be pronounced. Now, feel the joy that this woman must have felt when she was told to be free and sin no more. Can you imagine that being given a chance to live, that she changed her whole life, that she in turn showed mercy to others in her life, even those who were guilty of wrong?

Pastor Robert Young:

Like the woman who received mercy, God has forgiven us of our wrongs through his Son Jesus Christ. Now we can experience unspeakable joy, heavenly, eternal joy. We are also commanded to share this gift of mercy that we've received with someone else.

Pastor Robert Young:

Let's take three minutes to really reflect on the following questions. One, do I show mercy and forgiveness to those in my life that have wronged me? Two, do I show God's mercy and understanding to those that I disagree with?

Pastor Robert Young:

Repeat the following affirmation now and for the next seven days. As God has shown me mercy, I will show it to others. Again, as God has shown me mercy, I will show it to others.

Pastor Robert Young:

Our Assignment: Listen to this meditation daily, until it saturates your soul. Follow up every day with the daily devotionals and watch how over time God gives you a heart of mercy and transforms you into a more Christ like person. Amen.
