Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Welcome to the new season of the podcast, now titled "Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation"!
Join your host, Pastor Robert Young, as we embark on a journey of spiritual exploration and renewal. This podcast is designed to help you deepen your faith and find inner peace through calming, reflective, and transformative meditative practices inspired by scripture.
Our Evolution
While the podcast, formerly known as Not Your Parent's Religion, focused in Seasons 1 and 2 on correcting misinformation and myths about religious beliefs and the teaching of Jesus Christ, the program has evolved. In Season 3, we began drawing closer to God with guided meditations, exploring all the details of why and how to meditate, and discussing the Biblical origins of Christian meditations.
With over 30 years of experience in Church planting and mentoring other Pastors, and 30+ years of training leaders in evangelism/discipleship, Pastor Young is here to guide you through these moments of stillness and connection with God.
What to Expect in Season 4
We are excited to return with Season 4 starting Sunday, October 5. We will continue to offer a structured weekly schedule:
- Sundays: Our weekly guided meditation episode.
- Monday through Friday: Daily devotions and reflections that expand on the topic of the Sunday meditations.
- Wednesdays: Audio episodes of our House Church series. This series reflects the Bible's teaching that believers should gather together for corporate worship, fellowship, encouragement, and even admonishment.
For those seeking an enhanced experience, we are adding video versions of the meditations and devotions to our Patreon page. These videos are designed to give you a more immersive experience as you meditate on the Father, His teachings, and His presence.
Tune in each week as we lead you on this path to connecting more deeply with God.
Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Do You Hunger & Thirst for God's Presence?: Meditation from Matthew 5:6
What if your deepest cravings pointed beyond comfort and toward a life that actually satisfies? We explore that question through a guided Christian meditation anchored in Matthew 5:6—Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled—and build a prayerful journey that engages mind, body, and spirit.
We start by opening our hearts with Psalm 51, letting confession become an act of trust that makes room for mercy. From there, we slow down with measured breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, a simple practice that brings the nervous system into calm and helps us pay attention to God’s presence. Praise follows naturally as we repeat Psalm 8:9, lifting our focus from distraction to delight. With that foundation set, we step into the core reflection: translating the memory of real hunger and thirst into a spiritual ache for forgiveness, wisdom, and strength to do what is right.
The conversation then turns to Jesus as living water and the bread of life. We contrast the quick highs of the world with the steady, soul-deep satisfaction found in Christ. Guided visualization helps you see and feel the promise: I will satisfy that hunger. A searching question invites honest inventory—Do I pursue holiness with the urgency I bring to my most basic needs?—and we close with gratitude that reframes desire as a sign of life, not lack. To carry this forward, we share a simple assignment of daily devotion and reflection, a rhythm designed to keep the flame of holy longing burning bright.
If you’re longing for peace that holds and joy that lasts, press play, breathe deep, and come hungry. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help others find this guided practice.

Welcome to this week's Guided Christian Meditation. Here, we put aside all distractions to enter into God's presence and to hear from God better and to allow the Holy Spirit to make us more like Christ. I'm your host, Pastor Robert Young, and thank you for allowing me to be your guide on this journey.
Pastor Robert Young:Our scripture for this week is from Matthew chapter 5, verse 6, which says, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Pastor Robert Young:But first, according to Scriptures, God requires us to be completely involved and free from wrongful acts in mind, body, and spirit. Confession prepares the heart for being in the presence of an Almighty God. Let's start by repeating the prayer that King David prayed in Psalms chapter 51, verses 1 through 4, where it says, Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
Pastor Robert Young:Before we start to reflect on Matthew chapter 5, verse 6, let's prepare our minds by closing our eyes and taking a deep breath as we invite the presence of God to feel us. Now, take a deep breath in for a count of seven, hold the breath for a count of five, and slowly exhale for a count of seven. Let's repeat. Take a deep breath in for count of seven, hold the breath for a count of five, and then slowly exhale for count of seven.
Pastor Robert Young:Now let's prepare our body with muscle relaxation exercises. We will simply tense each muscle group for three seconds and then release the muscle. As always, don't hold your breath for this portion of the meditation. Let's begin with the calves. Lightly tense the calf muscles for count of three. Now release. Moving upward to the hamstrings, quads, and the glutes. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Moving upward to the abdominals, chest, and back areas. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Finally, moving to the arms and shoulders. Lightly tense these muscle groups for three seconds. Now release.
Pastor Robert Young:Now we can begin to enter into worship by repeating Psalm 100 verse 1-3 were it says, "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before Him with joyful songs. Let's take a moment to lift up our voice in praise and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father, who is worthy of all honor and glory, by repeating Psalms chapter 8, verse 9, which says, Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.
Pastor Robert Young:Now that we have prepared our mind, our body, and our spirit, let's begin to examine Matthew chapter 5, verse 6, where it says, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Let's concentrate on what Jesus means when he speaks of hungering and thirsting. He is not talking about a casual wish, but a desperate, life-and-death need for food and water. This is how urgently we should crave "righteousness."Righteousness means being right with God and desiring to live a holy, just life. To hunger and thirst for it means that our greatest spiritual need is not for comfort, success, or attention, but for God's perfect standard and presence to fill us
Pastor Robert Young:completely, first for salvation and ultimately in his perfect kingdom.
Pastor Robert Young:Begin to visualize time when you were truly hungry or thirsty, that physical persistent ache. Now, translate that feeling into a spiritual ache. See your soul reaching out for God's righteousness, for his forgiveness, for his wisdom, and for the strength to do what is right in the eyes of God. Now, picture Jesus standing before you, the source of living water, and the bread of life saying, I will satisfy that hunger. Now feel the peace and the quiet contentment in your soul, knowing that the Savior has promised you this ultimate fulfillment. Not the fulfillment that the world gives, but the everlasting food of joy, fulfillment that only a relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ can provide.
Pastor Robert Young:Let's take 5 minutes to really check our hearts to see if our deepest desire is for God’s righteousness by asking ourselves this question: Do I pursue holiness and closeness with God with the same urgency as I pursue my most basic physical needs, such as food, water, and comfort.
Pastor Robert Young:Repeat the following affirmation now and for the next 7 days:
Pastor Robert Young:Thank you, Lord, for giving me a hunger and thirst for your righteousness. And thank you for promising to satisfy me. Again, thank you, Lord, for giving me a hunger and thirst for your righteousness. And thank you for promising to satisfy me.
Pastor Robert Young:Our assignment. Follow up every day with the daily devotionals and reflection questions about this subject. And as you reflect on God's goodness and mercy, your soul will begin to ignite with desire for more of God's presence. Amen.
